You can achieve this by performing sit ups immediately followed by side bends or twists. rest for one minute then repeat.   Five sets of this routine is a great way to get the core firing. Now I am talking to those of you who are not exercising regularly. Hard  body dudes will need more challenging routines to get a result.

So, if you’re out of shape, have an old back injury or have a predisposition to lower back problems, try the following.

Start toning the stomach muscles by doing two sets of 10-20 second hovers. A hover or “bridge” is where you assume a push up position except your elbows are bent and your forearms are supporting you on the floor. This is an effective and exercise and you can ramp it up by increasing the time or adding more sets until you have built up a little core strength. This may only take say 10 -14 days.

Then you can move on and attempt bent knee crunches for a few weeks before tweaking the routine with 10 oblique crunches each side. Side bridges can be thrown in later to round out the sets. This approach may sound simple (it is) but do not underestimate how quickly you will firm up a flabby belly, whilst losing a few inches in girth!
